Abstract

This is not a book about AIDS, it is a book about responses to AIDS (p. 1). It charts religious metaphors of judgement, compassion, healing, isolation, and threat. It takes the body-positives of each of these as metaphors for specific religious-bodies. It brings rituals of purity and danger (Douglas) together with the nomisation of death, disease and deviancy (Berger), and confers them upon metaphors of the AIDS-body (Sontag). The question asked is of AIDS as a symbol for socio-religious order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
