Abstract

This paper analyzes the social condition of the students who entered the University of Caracas between 1776 and 1800 and the answer given by the Crown to those that were exempted from their correspondent defects of illegitimacy and poverty. In spite of strict university standards, at the end of the 18th century changes are noted that give evidence of the transition from colonial tradition to modernity. One of the relevant changes in university life was the exemptions given to individuals who did not comply with the requisites of the university's constitutions. These initiatives, though rare, fissured the exclusiveness the creoles had perpetuated in educational matters since the founding of the University. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
