Abstract
- Late into the night after learning that the Archdiocese of New York might close his 130-year-old parish school, Msgr. Howard Calkins sat at his desk in the rectory of Sacred Heart Church in Mount Vernon, making lists: Why the school should stay open; how the school could do a better job raising enrollment. But a third list stumped him. He calculated that it would take 200 people donating $1,000 every year for 10 years to keep his school going. He came up with two or three names, then put his pen down. ''We're probably not going to make it,'' he said he told himself. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
