Abstract

The article examines the impact urban sprawl in China is having on Chinese citizens who move from urbanized areas to peripheral and suburban regions. The author discusses social and economic factors regarding displaced Chinese urban migrants, noting differences between those who relocated by choice and those who were forced to move by government reclamation programs. Government compensation to households which are forced to relocate and the history of urbanization and suburbanization in the Chinese city of Shanghai are also addressed.
