Abstract

The article analyzes the political implications of a colophon written by Chinese imperial Chief Councilor Qin Gui for the Song Dynasty. The colophon was made into an inscription, the text of which was presumed lost until its discovery in the collected works of Ming official Wu Ne. The author discusses the relationship between the inscription and Neo-Confucianism, emphasizing the impact of this philosophy on the imperial power of the Song Dynasty, specifically that of Emperor Gaozong. Emphasis is given to the way Qin Gui discusses the necessity of a Chinese intelligentsia, or scholar-class, in the successful administration of the empire.
