Abstract

The article discusses prospects for eradicating major diseases on Earth and factors that apply to doing so. A meeting of scientists involved in eradicating smallpox is noted along with the commentary of some that they would have expected other diseases to be eradicated by now by younger scientists. In the absence of such eradications, the money required to devote to such efforts is said to be in question. A follow-up meeting of scientists reportedly focused on 21st century planning for disease eradication. Aspects of launched attempts to eradicate guinea worm disease and polio are discussed.
