The bovine postpartum period is characterized asa moment when the ovulation is suppressed, mainly inconsequence of insufficient release of gonadotropins. Conceptsand regulatory mechanisms of gonadotropin-releasinghormone (GnRH) had been described independently. Thisreview covers the influence of nutrition and suckling withemphasis on GnRH regulation, and provides up to date conceptsof neuroendocrine control of GnRH secretion during postpartumin cattle. Current knowledge of gonadotropin-inhibitoryhormone (GnIH), leptin, estrogens and kisspeptin during thisperiod are presented in order to provide a better understandingof the subject.
