Abstract

The article focuses on research charting connections between nerve cells in the brain. It states that neuroanatomist Jeffrey Lictman and associates at Harvard University in Massachusetts are creating a three-dimensional reconstruction of a mouse brain. It mentions that magnetic resonance imaging technologies (MRI) are allowing scientists to chart the connections and structures in the brain, including measurement of blood supply to determine how hard neurons are working. It comments on the study of water molecules traveling along axons that can indicate the paths of axon bundles in the brain. It talks about the U.S. National Institutes of Health's "human connectome project" to roughly map the brains of 1,200 people using diffusion MRI and functional connectivity MRI.
