Abstract

The essay discusses the work of alleged female African American mediums and psychics in Harlem, New York City in the early 20th century. African Americans' use of supernaturalism and mediums as a means to both contact a spirit world and alleviate day-to-day suffering brought on by inequality is explained. More broadly, the author is concerned with African American female involvement in Harlem's informal economy.
