Abstract

The article discusses the threat posed by heavy metal pollution on the health of residents in Hunan Province in China. A survey made by Nanjing Agricultural University in 2007 and reported by "Century Weekly" magazine in February 2011, revealed that 10 percent of rice samples collected from markets contained excessive levels of cadmium, that could lead to calcium loss in bones and kidney failure. Excessive lead levels were found in blood samples in over 200 children in Chenzhou City.
