Abstract

The article discusses the evolution of superweeds, such as pigweed and ragweed, which have begun to resist advanced technologies designed to protect U.S. cash crops. According to the author, weeds will eventually develop resistance to chemical herbicides. He notes that weeds have begun to develop a resistance to glyphosate, which is a key ingredient in the chemical herbicide Roundup and one in which cash crops have been genetically engineered to withstand. Topics include the necessity of agricultural scientists to seek out novel strategies to protect crops and criticism from some who think the agricultural industry's reliance on genetic engineering should be reassessed. INSET: Two Paths to Resistance.
