Abstract

In the beginning, there was light -- at least for photography. It wasn't until 1895, almost 60 years after the medium's invention, that an Englishman named Paul Martin began experimenting with taking photographs at night. Gaslights had illuminated London since the early 19th century. But it was the gelatin dry-plate process introduced in the late 1880s that lowered exposure time enough for Martin to shoot the city after dark. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
