Among the many masks that Lope de Vega adopted is that of the theorizing subject who reflects on his own poetry. This paper focuses on the sonnets of the Rimas de Tomé de Burguillos in order to study how Lope utilizes this mask as a means of a metaphysical self-interrogation, in a serious tone or with irony, on the nature and pragmatics of poetry.
