Abstract

Examines suffrage restriction efforts in Texas between the collapse of Reconstruction in 1873 to 1874 and the passage of a poll tax restriction on the franchise in 1902 and 1903. Reasons why Democratic politicians and editors agitated for suffrage restriction; Black constituents of Republican politicians that were a chief focus of disenfranchisement efforts.
