Abstract

An essay is presented on the controversy concerning exchange rate in China. It argues that excessive credit creation in the U.S. attributed to the international imbalance, which led to the country's account deficit in the early 1990s. It discusses the influence of sensitivity of the country's trade balances on price effects through exchange rate adjustments as well as highlights the factors responsible for China's large surpluses.
