Abstract

The article explores the use of visual aids for young children suffering from autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The author reflects on visual supports in the classroom such as real objects, photographs, and line drawings. Emphasis is given to selection of the type of visual representation and assessment and adjustment of the visual support. Other topics include visual schedules, using visuals to structure the environment, and the use of visual scripts to develop social skills in children who exhibit social avoidance, social indifference, and social awkwardness.
