Abstract

The article considers the role of social media and user-generated content in journalism and news gathering. The unwitting reporting of Pakistani resident Sohaib Athar on the U.S. raid which killed terrorist Osama bin Laden through his use of the microblog service Twitter is used as an example of how social media is altering both the nature of reporting and the relationship between mass media devoted to journalism and their customers.
