Abstract
- To improve the flow rate of about 4.5.10[sup 16]&Drarr;/s a new dissociator based on a microwave discharge at 2.45 GHz has been developed and installed into the HERMES Atomic Beam Source. The long term stability was found to be excellent. Compared with the Radio-Frequency dissociator (RFD) used so far the intensity was increased by 15% although the sextupole magnet system has been optimized for the RF-dissociator. Furthermore the Carrier Jet method was tested, a new method of beam formation based on an expanded beam surrounded by an overexpanded carrier jet. Since there was a large deviation between the measurements and the results of the NavierStokes calculations Monte-Carlo simulations were performed. The results agree well with the measurements, showing that the method used in ref. does not provide a realistic description of beam formation in this flow range, in particular concerning the diffusive mixture of the two beams.
