Abstract
- The article discusses the history of the sport of soccer in the U.S. and examines how professional leagues in America, including the North American Soccer League (NASL) and Major League Soccer (MLS), have contributed to the globalization of the game. It explores reasons for the marginal popularity of soccer in American sports and popular culture, compares the cultural aspects of basketball and baseball in the U.S. to those found in soccer in Great Britain, and chronicles the history of both the NASL and MLS. Other topics include television broadcasting of soccer in the U.S., the commercial advertising and marketing of American sports' teams, and the book "Offside: Soccer and American Exceptionalism" by Andrei Markovits and Steven Hellerman.
