Abstract

The article discusses the "better mousetrap theory" of history, which holds that the adoption of improved technology leads to social change, as in the case of the adoption of slavery by Puritans off the coast of Nicaragua. The author argues that early farmers were less efficient than hunter-gatherers, expending more energy to produce less, and that institutional and social change can lead to to technological innovation.
