Abstract

The article discusses the political and economic difficulties surrounding TEPCO, a Japanese power company which owns the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant at which a nuclear accident occurred in 2011. Compensation claims resulting from the accident could exceed the company's assets, and it also owes trillions of yen to bondholders and banks. Topics discussed include the possible nationalisation of the company, competing firms, and possible energy shortages in Japan.
