Abstract

The article presents the results of a study on the detection of EGHV-5 in a self-limiting papilloma-like lesion in the trunk of an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). According to the authors, herpes virus infections are prevalent in captive populations of Asian elephants and causes major implications for elephant management. The authors note that molecular studies have thus far identified six distinct elephant gamma herpes viruses (EGHVs) and seven distinct elephant endotheliotropic herpes viruses (EEHVs).
