Abstract
- The article considers energy industries and public utilities in Japan. Efforts to conserve energy in response to the closure of most of the country's nuclear power plants following the Sendai earthquake and ensuing Fukushima nuclear plant accident are discussed. The Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) is used as an example of the large utilities which have effective monopolies on the production and transmission of electric power.
