Abstract
- The article provides an overview of the field of the study of linguistic regional variation in France. It considers the history of linguistic change, the process of standardization of grammar and language, and the study of diatopic variation. Some notable people discussed include Jules Gilliéron, co-author of the book "Atlas linguistique de la France" published between 1902 and 1910, as well as linguists Albert Dauzat, Fernand Carton, and David Hornsby. Some topics considered include grammar, patois, dialects, and morphology.
