Abstract

The article discusses the U.S. Department of Defense's decision to cancel plans to deploy the Medium Extended-Altitude Air Defense System (Meads) while developing a European defense system based on the SM-3 kinetic missile killers. The aerospace company Lockheed Martin has supported the Meads program, arguing that the program's goals had been met and that the program was competitively priced. The fiscal year 2012 budget of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is also examined.
