Abstract
- The article presents literary criticism of the short story "A Deep Sleeper" by Charles W. Chesnutt, in which the author explores the lexical use of African American dialect in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The author examines the Chesnutt's dialectical and lexical choices in order to analyze how he navigated issues of race, identity, and social change within his writing. The figure of Uncle Julius in the story is used to explore Chesnutt's audience within American societal castes.
