Abstract

The University of Arizona (UA) Libraries are implementing a comprehensive patron-driven acquisition (PDA) system for English-language books. The goal is to increase discovery options and improve delivery of monographic content for users while increasing cost effectiveness. PDA is one part of a multi-pronged monographic acquisition system that includes patron-driven acquisition for both electronic and print books, as well as a highly selective approval plan that is complemented by librarian selection as needed. Rapid changes in technology, supply-chain management, business models, and scholarly communication provide opportunities to redefine how best to meet the needs of the academic community the UA Libraries serve.
