Abstract: The article discusses the reconstruction of villages and homes in Japan which were destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. The destruction of the city of Onagawa, Japan is described. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan's spending plans, the difficulty of rebuilding for an ageing population, and the development of policies towards nuclear power following the disaster at the Fukushima power plant are examined.
