Abstract

The article discusses computer science and journalism, looking at the development of tools which can support accountability reporting in journalism. The author examines the use of information technology (IT) in investigative reporting, looking at how photocopying machines, relational databases, and Structured Query Language changed ethics, research methods, and the types of data which can be analyzed. Other topics include the decline in revenue of traditional news organizations, combining information from digital sources including public records, financial disclosure forms, and private documents, and digital investigative tools such as TimeFlow, Google Earth, and ManyEyes.
