Abstract
- The article discusses teaching workloads for college professors in the U.S. and examines how university budget shortfalls have forced college administrations to require professors to spend more time teaching courses rather than engaging in research or special projects. Particular focus is paid to topics including the course scheduling responsibilities of college department deans, an effort to standardize teaching loads at the Pennsylvania State University by president Graham Spanier, and a lawsuit filed by professor Christopher P. Neck against Arizona State University regarding his teaching contract. Comments from University of Nevada at Las Vegas dean Paul Jarley, George Mason University professor Amit Dutta, and Penn State department head Robert C. Marshall are also included.
