Abstract

The article describes a hybrid system proposed by Duke University engineer Nico Hotz wherein sunlight heats a mixture of water and methanol in a maze of glass tubes on a rooftop. It notes that this system can produce hydrogen more efficiently than current technology. Another benefit of the system is that it can store the resulting hydrogen and use it on demand in fuel cells. Hotz cites the exergetic efficiency of the system during winter and summer seasons.
