Abstract

The article discusses the issues that arise from the strikes of teachers in Great Britain. It emphasizes that such undertakings of teachers make their unions out of step with the profession. It stresses that the biggest threat that unions face has to do with the explosive expansion of the academies programme. It asserts that as academies have powers to set their own pay and conditions, it can lead to an erosion of union leaders' power to negotiate on a national basis.
