Abstract

The article comments on the rapid increase in the use of carotid stenting for preventing cerebrovascular diseases in the U.S. despite nonconclusive data. According to several researchers, 70 to 90 percent of carotid stents are now being implanted in asymptomatic patients. Some studies also show an association between carotid stenting and increased risk of stroke and mortality.
