Abstract
- The article offers the author's insights on creating a perception of mathematics in the U.S. as being an accumulation of facts rather than a subject involving a creative use of the mind. He discusses an approach called teaching to intuition wherein teachers formulate activities that contribute to understanding and utilize such understanding to explain the rules. He presents a word problem which could be taught to allow students to use mental activity instead of relying on a memorized process.
