Abstract

The article provides a brief history of the Stations of the Cross, the series of artistic representations of Jesus carrying the cross toward his crucifixion that are used as devotions within the Catholic Church. The author describes the Stations, also known as the Via Crucis, as a spiritual pilgrimage, and discusses the medieval origins of the practice, the gratitude inspired by praying the Stations and the use of the Stations by parishioners to experience a closer, deeper union between themselves and Jesus Christ.
