Abstract

Knowledge is one of the most basic elements of life and forms the life of every living thing. The generally accepted definition of knowledge involves the relationship between the "knower," the known, and perception. Every discipline is based upon knowledge. Theories of knowledge (epistemology/knowledge of philosophy) are based on concepts and language, and are usually extradisciplinary. The focus of this study is to expose the problematics of Library and Information Science (LIS) theory in Turkey and to describe knowledge in this field. The theory of knowledge in any discipline can only be established and enhanced based on the unique knowledge of that field. A theory of LIS knowledge is possible due to its distinctiveness and difference from other fields. This distinct knowledge comes from the knowledge of the library institution, which remaims unchanged since its origins. When removed from the discipline (LIS), this knowledge becomes ordinary and unoriginal. This article will examine LIS epistemology from three perspectives: LIS field knowledge; the knowledge involved in the organization of recorded information (all processes from selection to use); and the knowledge of the user.
