Abstract

The author responds to the article entitled "Is the present day post-medieval?," by James R. Dixon, which appears in this issue. He specifically responds to two issues raised, the practical and intellectual issues associated with applying archaeological methodologies to contemporary sites, and the role of the the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology in promoting such archaeological endeavors. Topics considered include history within living memory, the competing roles of anthropology and contemporary archaeology, and issues associated with politicizing archaeology.
