LA CODIFICACIÓN DE LA IMAGEN POSITIVA Y NEGATIVA A TRAVÉS DE LOS MARCADORES: ¿ME ENTIENDES?, VAMOS Y VERÁS.

This paper proposes an analysis of three deverbal markers: ¿me entiendes?, vamos y verás and demonstrates that, contrary to what has been said before (Brown and Levinson, 1987), these markers can codify both positive as well as negative face in contexts of mitigation. Deverbal markers, thanks to their syntactic nature and the possibility to codify hearer's presence in conversation, can extend their use grammaticalizing the non-propositional meaning, i.e. speaker's attitude towards the hearer. Such extension can be considered part of a more permanent process that is grammaticalization (Hopper and Traugott, 1993). The use of the markers ¿me entiendes?, vamos y verás is observed only in contexts whose meaning seems to indicate the speaker's will to maintain positive face and save hearer's negative face or of both participants of a conversation.
