Abstract

The article discusses the influence of automates upon mankind. It examines the development of interest in and exhibitions of automates in France during the 18th century, the relationship between automates and the Enlightenment, and the philosophical questions of human existence posed by automates. The article discusses the life and work of French inventor Jacques de Vaucanson, particularly the significance of his project known as the Bleeding Man.
