Abstract

10 P.M. (13) NUCLEAR AFTERSHOCKS In the 10 months since an earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex in Japan (above, a woman who lived near the plant being checked for radiation), that country has closed all but a handful of its 54 reactors. Germany has decided to phase out its 17 nuclear power plants by 2022. Should the United States follow suit? In this ''Frontline'' episode, Miles O'Brien examines the future of nuclear energy around the world and asks whether any of the 104 reactors in the United States could suffer a Fukushima-type accident. He also investigates a controversial decision facing nuclear regulators: whether to relicense the nearly 40-year-old Indian Point plant, 38 miles north of Manhattan. Critics, like Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York, insist that the risks are too great. But proponents, including former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York, argue that the plant should remain open because it provides about a quarter of New York City and Westchester County's power while producing few greenhouse gas emissions. 2 P.M. (HBO) TEMPLE GRANDIN (2010) Claire Danes earned an Emmy for her role as Ms. Grandin, the autistic animal behaviorist who helps design slaughterhouses. The director, Mick Jackson, who also won an Emmy, used snapshot images that track Ms. Grandin's self-perceptions from her condition's early diagnosis through her turbulent school years and the unwavering support of her mother (Julia Ormond), aunt (Catherine O'Hara) and science teacher (David Strathairn). ''Hers is a tale that could be easily played up for drama, intrigue and weepy reconciliations, but this narrative is loyal to Ms. Grandin's credo: emotions are secondary to tangible results,'' Alessandra Stanley wrote in The New York Times. ''And the result is a movie that is funny, instructive and also intangibly charming.'' [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
