Abstract

In this study, New Year Celebrations in Istanbul between 1926 and 1938 have been examined. Beyoğlu district is seen at the front as the center of entertainment in Istanbul. Several people from almost all socio-economic levels would go to the entertainment venues here. The interest in the New Year brought New Year articles with it. In these articles, the New Year was analyzed from an either pessimistic or optimistic point of view. Moreover, the passion for overspending was criticized. One peculiarity of these celebrations was to start the tradition of New Year lottery which has reached the present day. This lottery would draw much attention as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
