Abstract
- The article examines the function of the hybridity of antebellum story-papers and the serialization of the novel "The Hidden Hand," by Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte (E.D.E.N.) Southworth in the story-paper the "Ledger." The novel is said to rely upon the form of the story-paper to disrupt gender norms and national coherence. The plot of the novel is discussed. It is pointed out that the novel espouses contradictory messages about gender normativity and sectionalism.
