Abstract

The author discusses the freedom of the press and issues of censorship in Belarus in light of his detention by the country's security services for reporting on the country's biggest manufacturer called Minsk Tractor Works. The author looks at the country's mass media industry and President Alexander Lukashenko's regulation of the press. Topics include the detention of journalist Natalya Radina of the Charter 97 news website, the newspaper "Novy Chas," or "New Time," which is banned from nationwide circulation, and comments by journalist Marina Zolotova of an internet portal and online news service located at tut.by.
