Abstract

The article argues that progressives in the U.S. should stop promoting policies aimed at lowering the price of gasoline by increasing the supply of oil, and instead work on initiatives to reduce gasoline consumption. The author discusses three policies that would be particularly beneficial. In her view the U.S. should institute a loan-guarantee program to help people buy fuel-efficient cars, establish incentives for employers to organize car pools and offer telecommuting options, and revamp federal transportation funding to reward cities and states that achieve specified targets for oil savings.
