Abstract

Nicholas II's view of himself as a divinely appointed tsar clashed with the changing political needs of early twentieth-century Russia and the ambiguous position of the Church as subordinate to the state administration. The resulting distrust between the tsar and the church hierarchy and between the hierarchs and the people further alienated the tsar from his subjects in the years leading up to the revolution of 1905.
