Abstract

The article focuses on the provision of care at home to elderly, ill, or disabled people, which it notes is a rapidly growing industry. As the U.S. population ages, the demand for home care workers will rise, offering the potential to create millions of new jobs. It profiles the activist organization Caring Across Generations, which is organizing both home care workers and consumers to improve the training, working conditions, and wages of home care workers, along with the organization's co-director Ai-jen Poo. A campaign to extend federal minimum-wage and overtime rules to home care workers is noted. Others working on the issue are discussed, including Ellen Bravo of Family Values @ Work, Deepak Bhargava of the Center for Community Change, and Sarita Gupta of Jobs With Justice.
