A Long Eighteenth Century? What Eighteenth Century?

The article discusses the trend of "presentism" in the study of English, Italian, German, French, and Spanish literature, and presents the author's opinion that decreasing emphasis on early modern and Enlightenment literature represents a loss for scholars and prevents full understanding of modern works influenced by earlier ones. The impact of periodization on which literary works are taught is also touched on.
