Abstract

The article discusses the negative effects of coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and hepatitis B virus (HBV). Both viruses can cause chronic disease, cancer and death and are not eliminated with the use of current therapies. An overview of high HBV infection rates which also reflect a failure of maternal and child health programs is given. Coinfection with HIV causes higher levels of hepatitis B viremia that progresses to chronic hepatitis B.
