Abstract

The article looks at economic and political conditions in India as of 2012. It notes that the Indian economy performed strongly during the late 2000s, but less well between 2010 and 2012, with slower economic growth, higher inflation, and increasing urban economic inequality. The author discusses sources of optimism as well as obstacles India faces in improving its economy. He believes that the country's politics poses the most significant obstacles and says the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the Indian National Congress Party has failed to enact clearly expansionary monetary policies, has not been transparent in its economic policy-making, and has adopted policies benefiting big businesses rather than small ones.
