Abstract
- The article discusses the case of the cargo vessel Rena which ran aground in Astrolabe reef off the eastern coast of New Zealand in October 2011. Officers Mauro Balomaga and Leonil Relon, captain and navigation officer respectively, were sentenced to jail after pleading guilty to charges that led to the accident. It also discusses the environmental impact of oil spill resulting from the accident.
